Hair transplantation (also known as follicular unit transplant or FUUT) is the procedure of moving healthy hair follicles from one part of your scalp to another. It can give you thicker, fuller hair, and help conceal scars from previous surgery or accidents. It can also fill in gaps from baldness caused by medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.
The procedure takes place in your doctor’s office. First, your surgeon cleans the area and numbs it with medicine. Grafts that are too high may lead to a cobblestone appearance and those that are too deep will cause scarring and rejection of the transplanted follicles.
The follicles will begin to grow once they have been moved to the new area of your scalp. They will not grow as quickly as your natural hairs, but they should be able to fill in the balding areas. It is important to follow your doctor’s aftercare instructions carefully, especially during the first month, to help the grafts get established and to prevent complications.
After a few months, your follicles will have matured enough to start growing new hairs and cover any scarring from the transplant. Some of your own natural hairs may fall out around the transplant, but this is a normal part of the process.
